Looking over the builders’ work: foreign architects, artisans, and marble at Meninx (Djerba)

Abstract Throughout the second century AD, civic centres of wealthy coastal cities Africa Proconsularis underwent deep-rooted changes. Up to this point local stone had been largely employed for their buildings, but from Hadrianic period onwards there was an increasing use marbles, which were imported with considerable efforts and at great expense. These marbles came primarily Italy, Greece, Asia Minor, brought them new architectural concepts, as well architects artisans who have generally identified ‘Italian’ ‘Eastern’ in past scholarship. This article will examine a temple, structure presumed be portico, basilica harbour city Meninx, located southern Djerba (Tunisia). The exceptionally good preservation these buildings’ components documentation produced during on-site recording 2017–18 allow detailed understanding original building processes. show how mobile industry Roman Empire turn challenges any attempts overly schematic territorial placement traditions, provenance themselves.
